University of Notre Dame volleyball is a nationally ranked program with National Champion Coach, Jim McLaughlin in his second year as head coach for the Fighting Irish.

Q. How young do kids get recruited?

University of Notre Dame: It’s happening way too soon. I have received a number of calls from kids who are now in the 8th grade (2020). I’m very opposed to recruiting this early however we have to do it as our competitors are doing it. We will complete our 2018 class soon (4 athletes) and are now in the midst of recruiting 2019 (9th graders). Again it’s way too early and we will continue to see more and more transfers each year as a result of early recruiting.

Q. When should we start contacting colleges?

University of Notre Dame: Molly is now 15 years old (sophomore in high school) and has been contacting colleges as well as being contacted through her club coach for the last 6 months. She will have to start narrowing down her choices in a few months as many of her friends and teammates are starting to make commitments. I think the sophomore year is early enough however we are evaluating more and more 9th graders (2019) at this time.

Q. How many schools should we email?

University of Notre Dame: Every school is unique and special in some way, shape, and form. What is important to the recruit and her family? Can the list of schools meet her requirements on a number of levels? As the kids and their parents engage in a sound process often the priorities will change – feelings come and go so be careful of those feelings.

Q. What details do you like to see in the initial email?

University of Notre Dame: I receive 400-500 emails a year from recruits, maybe more.

  • Their interest

  • Their schedule

  • Position and ability

  • Their coaches

  • Film

Q. How much or how little should we email college coaches?

University of Notre Dame: Email followed up by a phone call.

Q. When can we contact you?

University of Notre Dame: A recruit can contact us anytime. I wish the NCAA would limit this as a limit may help eliminate recruiting that is happening to early.

Q. When can you contact us?

University of Notre Dame:

Recruit = September 1st of their junior year.

Club coach = anytime.

Q. Should we make a recruiting video?

University of Notre Dame: Yes - I like to see the recruit jump, spike, and two complete matches so I can study their movements and eye-work.

Q. When should a recruiting video be sent out?

University of Notre Dame: I think the sophomore year is early enough – first semester.

Q. What do you like to see in a recruiting video?

University of Notre Dame: I like to see the recruit jump, spike, and two complete matches so I can study their movements and eye-work.

Q. What do you look for in a player on the court?

University of Notre Dame: Ability to jump, does she have a good arm, is she or can she become a complete volleyball player in terms of skill level, does she compete, does she go hard all the time, does she have the intangibles etc…

Q. What so you look for in a player off the court?

University of Notre Dame: How does she respond to her parents, level of maturity, can she be a good teammate, how does she relate to people, how does she respond to our coaches?

Q. What kind of kid stands out to you when you walk through a big tournament?

University of Notre Dame: Courtney Thompson, Jessica Swarbrick, Tama Miyashiro
